How to convert JPG to PNG

When converting to PNG is useful
- An app, website or print service only accepts PNG files.
- You are going to edit an image many times. Re-saving a JPG repeatedly loses a little quality each time; PNG never does.
- You are preparing a screenshot or graphic for a document and want its edges to stay sharp from now on.
What converting can’t do
A PNG made from a JPG looks exactly like the JPG. It cannot bring back detail lost when the JPG was created, and it won’t make the background transparent: that needs a background-removal tool. The PNG will also be several times larger, because PNG is lossless.
Photos from phones
Phone photos often contain hidden information such as the location where they were taken. Converting to PNG removes it, because only the pixels are copied into the new file. If you want to keep the JPG format and just remove that data, use Remove EXIF Data, which doesn’t change the image at all.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting to PNG improve the quality?
No. PNG keeps exactly what is in the JPG, including any blur or blockiness from JPG compression, but it cannot restore detail that was already lost. It does stop further loss if you edit and save the image repeatedly.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Removing a background needs a separate editing step.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly (lossless), while JPG throws away detail you are unlikely to notice. For photos, a PNG is typically 3–10 times larger.
When should I use PNG instead of JPG?
Use PNG when an app or website requires it, when you will edit the image many times, or for screenshots, diagrams and text, which PNG keeps perfectly sharp.
