PNG or JPG: which should you use?
- JPG is best for photos. It uses lossy compression, so a photo that is 8 MB as PNG may be under 1 MB as JPG with no visible difference.
- PNG is best for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or transparency. It keeps every pixel exactly.
Converting makes most sense for photos that were saved as PNG by accident, for example by a screenshot tool or a design app, and are now too big to email or upload.
Transparent backgrounds
JPG has no transparency. Any transparent or semi-transparent area of your PNG is placed on a solid background: white by default, or any colour you pick in the settings. Choose a colour that matches where the image will be used, such as the background colour of a website or slide.
Choosing a quality
The default of 90% keeps photos looking identical to the original to almost everyone. Lower it to 75–80% for much smaller files where a tiny loss is acceptable, for example images for email. If sharp edges or small text start to look fuzzy, raise the quality, or keep that image as PNG.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent parts of a PNG are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default; you can pick any colour before converting.
Will I lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some fine detail is discarded. At 85–95% quality the difference is very hard to see in photos. Sharp text, logos and screenshots can show slight blurring, so keep those as PNG if they look worse.
Why convert PNG to JPG at all?
Photos saved as PNG are often 5–10 times larger than the same photo as JPG. Converting makes them much easier to email, upload to forms with size limits, or share.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Drop as many PNGs as you like; each is converted in turn, and you can download them one by one or together as a ZIP file.
