Why you might have WebP files
Websites such as Google Images, online shops and news sites often deliver pictures as WebP because the files are smaller and pages load faster. When you save one of these images, you get a .webp file. Your browser shows it without trouble, but you may find that:
- older versions of Microsoft Office, Photoshop or Windows Photo Viewer won’t open it,
- a website’s upload form only accepts JPG or PNG,
- a printing service or email program rejects it.
Converting to JPG solves all of these, because JPG is supported everywhere.
Good to know
- Transparency: transparent areas become white (or a colour you choose). To keep them transparent, use WebP to PNG.
- Animation: animated WebP images are converted using their first frame only.
- Quality: the default of 90% keeps the image looking the same; the JPG may be slightly larger than the WebP was.
- AVIF files: the newer AVIF format causes the same compatibility problems. Use AVIF to JPG for those.
Frequently asked questions
Why do images I save from websites end up as WebP?
Many websites serve WebP because it is 25–35% smaller than JPG for the same quality. Your browser shows it fine, but some apps, email programs and upload forms still do not accept it.
Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
A little, because both formats are lossy and the image is compressed again. At the default 90% quality the difference is very hard to see.
What about animated WebP images?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG cannot store animation.
What if my WebP has a transparent background?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white or a colour you choose. To keep transparency, use WebP to PNG instead.
